Our List of Top 10 Cities to Visit
Sydney
The layout of hills, estuary and beaches alone would make it worthwhile visiting Sydney. The Opera House is getting old but is still a marvelous billowing of sails marking the inner harbor and the arboretum in the valley beyond where parrots and kookaburras abound is a must. A stroll up to the New South Wales Art Museum brings the strangeness of the Southern Continent in sharp focus.
The city is nice but one does not go to Sydney for the city and its opal shops. Rather the market below the Harbor Bridge and wine shops along the waterside are all worth spending a few hours. On the other side of the city the Aquarium is the best in the world.
Kyoto
Kyoto, the old capital of Japan, a few miles away had over 900 shrines and barely one was damaged while the modern buildings in Osaka took a heavy toll. Old Kyoto, its temples and small streets are all worth visiting. In particular the Kinkaku-ji and Ginkaku-ji (Gold and Silver) temples are magnificent. Spend time in the small coffee shops long the irrigation walk.
Prague
This city is Europe before the World Wars. The Charles Bridge across the river to the palace is full of puppeteers, singers and musicians and a stroll is a visit in the sun to a wealth of talent. The city itself is full of small squares and tiny lanes, puppet and glass shops, and beautiful restaurants any of which will satisfy you. A visit to the Jewish area and its synagogues and cemeteries open your eyes to pr-holocaust Europe. Kafka’s home is on your route.
Rio de Janeiro
Possibly, the town is not as impressive as others on this list, but how can you miss a visit to Ipenema and Copacabana beaches where even in the winter the sea is warm and the sight of nubile youngsters is like nothing else in the world. A visit to the favelas is worth seeing how one half of the world lives here below a great statue of Christ with arms spread above abject poverty below.
Oslo
The largest city in the world judged by its boundaries that include all the mountains around. It is a city that makes the most of its fjord location. If for nothing else the ability to see intact Viking ships is worthwhile a visit but add to them, the Kontiki, Amundsen’s ships, and a host of nautical nowhere-else museums on one island is worth several days.
Bruuge (Bruges)
The port city of Brugge in Flanders was the center of North Western Europe in the 15th and 16th Centuries. It excelled in banking with great connections to the Medici family in Venice. Today, it is no longer a port but the 16th century town is a wonder to roam through, to take boat rides on the canals and to drink in the old world coffee houses which specialize in chocolate.
Alice Springs
The center of Australia is a city apart. It lays in the middle of the outback still a hundred or more miles from Ayres Rock (Uluru) but an easy bus-ride through Aboriginal country. In Alice itself, the bars replete with Australian bands are unique. It’s a place to relax and feel the immensity of the continent.
Tokyo
Japanese has no connection with the European Greco-Roman languages so getting around in this large city is a fascination. Tokyo has a center dominated on one side by the Imperial Palace and on the other by ultra-modern Ginza. One could spend several weeks just there but the other centers of the city, each a short metro ride away, are worth visiting. Akihabara is dedicated to high technology consumer electronics; Ueno is a unique city park and zoo; while Shibuya is for the young people.
Paris
Paris is a tourist town but a determined visitor can find much more than the Sacr Coeur and the Arc de Triomphe. The Picasso Museum of Paris and the art galleries along the Seine all take time especially if interspersed with excellent cooking of restaurants and time spent drinking a glass of wine in a sidewalk caf. It is said, and I have proved it true, that if you spend time in such a sidewalk caf on the Champs Elyses you will meet a friend. When I last visited as dusk was falling and the lights were coming on an acquaintance from Croatia who I had met several years before appeared and took a glass with me.
Boston
This Massachusetts town has everything: the finest universities in the world, American Revolution sites, the Cam River with its boating and the finest river waterfronts anywhere. The art museums (seven of them) could occupy a whole visit but one must sample the clam chowder time and again to get a sense of the city. Boston is definitely one of my top 10 cities to visit! The cobblestone roads in the historical downtown, the cultural immersion everywhere, and the fact that you can be near in the city one minute and at a beach later in the afternoon sells me!
